Introduction
Cobblemon is the mod that brings Pokémon to Minecraft Java: catching, turn-based battles, evolutions, breeding. To play it with friends, you need a server running exactly the same modpack as the players. The simplest way: install the official Cobblemon modpack (Fabric) in one click on a 6 GB server, then have every player install the same modpack through CurseForge or Modrinth.
This guide walks you through creating the server, how your friends join it, which add-ons are worth it, and which settings to change (shiny rate, spawns, commands). Versions and prices checked on November 2, 2026.
What you need before you start
- Minecraft Java Edition for every player. Cobblemon is a Java mod: it does not work on Bedrock, consoles or phones.
- A modpack chosen in advance. The server and the players must have the same list of mods in the same version. Starting from a ready-made modpack is much safer than assembling mods by hand.
- A server with enough memory. The official modpack runs well with 6 GB for 2 to 5 players. Big modpacks such as Cobblemon Academy need more (see below).
The latest Cobblemon version we found on November 2, 2026 is 1.7.3 (January 31, 2026), for Minecraft 1.21.1, on Fabric and NeoForge. On the server side, the only dependency is Fabric API (on Fabric): the Kotlin library is bundled with the mod.
Choosing your Cobblemon modpack
| Modpack | Best for | Recommended server memory |
|---|---|---|
| Official Cobblemon (Fabric) | Discovering Cobblemon with friends, the lightest | 6 GB (Start plan) |
| Official Cobblemon (NeoForge) | If you want to add NeoForge mods | 6 GB (Start plan) |
| Cobblemon Academy 2.0 | A fuller adventure with many extra mods | 12 GB (Plugins plan) |
| Cobblemon: Star Academy | Story-driven adventure, very popular in 2026 | 12 GB (Plugins plan), 24 GB beyond 10 players |
The official modpack comes in two versions on Modrinth: Fabric (over 11 million downloads) and NeoForge. Pick Fabric unless you have a specific reason: it is the most used version, so the most tested. To compare with other packs, see our list of the best Minecraft modpacks of 2026.
Cobblemon Academy 2.0 (Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.1) and Star Academy are published on CurseForge with ready-to-use server files (a "server pack"). They add many mods around Cobblemon: plan for at least 8 to 10 GB of memory, hence our 12 GB recommendation.
Creating the Cobblemon server step by step
On serv-minecraft, installation happens in the panel, with nothing to download on your computer:
- Order a server. The Start plan (6 GB RAM, 4 vCPU, €3.99/month) is enough for the official modpack and 2 to 5 players. For Academy or a bigger group, take Plugins (12 GB, €8.99/month) or Moddé (24 GB, €18.99/month). Player slots are unlimited on every plan.
- Open the Modpacks tab in the panel and search for "Cobblemon".
- Choose the Fabric or NeoForge version of the official modpack (or Cobblemon Academy if it shows up in the search) and start the installation. The panel installs the modpack with the right Minecraft and loader version.
- Start the server from the console. The first start takes longer (world generation and config files).
- Copy the server address shown in the panel: that is what your friends will enter in Minecraft.
For a modpack missing from the search, download its server pack from CurseForge, upload the files through the panel's Files tab, then start the server. Details on Fabric and NeoForge are in our guide installing Forge or Fabric on a Minecraft server.

Player side: joining the server
This is the step that most often goes wrong. Every player needs the same modpack, in the same version as the server:
- Install the CurseForge or Modrinth app (both free).
- Search for the modpack used on the server (for example "Cobblemon Fabric") and install the same version.
- Launch the modpack from the app, then Multiplayer, Add Server, and paste the address.
If a player gets a missing mods or version mismatch error when connecting, it is almost always a modpack version that does not match. Update the server and the players at the same time.
A player who does not use a modpack can also install Cobblemon and Fabric API by hand in a Fabric 1.21.1 profile, as long as they are exactly the same versions as on the server and the server has no other mods required on the client.
Add-ons worth installing
Once the server is running, you can extend Cobblemon with add-ons. The most popular:
- Cobblemon Raid Dens: group raids against powerful Pokémon, great on a server with friends.
- CobbleDollars: a currency and merchants to buy items and Poké Balls.
- Mega Showdown: Mega Evolutions and other battle mechanics.
- Cobbreeding: a breeding system closer to the Pokémon games.
To add one: stop the server, drop the .jar file into the mods folder through the Files tab, then restart. Check on the add-on page that it matches your Cobblemon and Minecraft version, and whether players need it too (most do). Add them one at a time: if the server no longer starts, you know which one to remove.
If you want many add-ons at once, a modpack such as Cobbleverse already bundles them, tested together.
Configuring Cobblemon: shiny, spawns and commands
The main settings live in config/cobblemon/main.json, editable from the Files tab:
- shinyRate: 8192 by default, a 1 in 8192 chance for a Pokémon to be shiny. Set 4096 or lower for a more generous server with friends.
- pokemonPerChunk: 1.0 by default, controls spawn density. Lower it if the server lags with many players.
- enableSpawning: true by default. Set to false for no wild spawns at all (useful for a battle-only server).
After a change, type /cobblemonconfig reload in the console, or restart the server. Make a backup before editing config files.
Two handy operator commands to prepare the server:
/pokegive <pokémon>: gives you a Pokémon (handy for testing or replacing a lost starter)./spawnpokemon <pokémon>: spawns a Pokémon at your position (events, tests).
How much memory for a Cobblemon server?
What uses memory is not Cobblemon alone but the whole modpack and the number of players exploring at the same time:
- Official modpack, 2 to 5 players: 6 GB (Start, €3.99/month).
- Official modpack beyond 5 players, or Academy and Star Academy: 12 GB (Plugins, €8.99/month).
- Big modpack and more than 10 active players: 24 GB (Moddé, €18.99/month).

FAQ
Can I create a free Cobblemon server?
Yes, by hosting the server on your own PC: you then have to keep it on, open a port on your router and share your IP address. For an always-online server without those constraints, a host like serv-minecraft starts at €3.99/month for 6 GB.
Does Cobblemon work on Bedrock or consoles?
No. Cobblemon is a mod for Minecraft Java Edition on computers. Bedrock, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox or phone players cannot join a Cobblemon server.
Fabric or NeoForge for Cobblemon?
Fabric, unless you want to add mods that only exist on NeoForge. The official Fabric modpack is by far the most downloaded, so the most tested.
Why can't my friends connect?
In the vast majority of cases, their modpack is not the same version as the server's, or they are missing an add-on you installed. Compare versions and mod lists.
How many players on a Cobblemon server?
There is no slot limit on our plans: memory is what matters. Plan 6 GB for 2 to 5 players with the official modpack, 12 GB beyond that or with a big modpack.
Can I install Cobblemon Academy 2.0 on the server?
Yes. Search for it in the Modpacks tab; if it does not show up, upload its server pack downloaded from CurseForge through the Files tab. Plan for 12 GB.
How do I increase the shiny rate?
Change the shinyRate value in config/cobblemon/main.json (8192 by default, a lower value means more shinies), then type /cobblemonconfig reload.
How do I update Cobblemon on the server?
Make a backup, update the modpack from the panel, then ask every player to update theirs in CurseForge or Modrinth. Check that your add-ons exist for the new version before updating.
Can I add Paper plugins to a Cobblemon server?
No, a Fabric or NeoForge server does not load Paper plugins. Use equivalent Fabric or NeoForge mods instead (land claims, permissions, economy).
