Minecraft Horror Server: 5 Modpacks to Play with Friends for Halloween

Cave Horror Project just released its Chapter 6 and October brings scary sessions back. Five horror modpacks you can play together, how to install them on a server, the settings that keep the mood and the RAM you actually need.

Introduction

The easiest way to run a Minecraft horror server is to install a ready-made horror modpack, such as Cave Horror Project (Forge 1.20.1, over 1.8 million downloads on Modrinth), then have every player install the exact same version. A horror pack is much lighter than a big tech pack: 8 to 12 GB of RAM is usually enough for a group of 2 to 6 players.

October is when these packs come back on every server list. This guide covers five horror modpacks you can play in multiplayer, how to install them on a server, the settings that keep the atmosphere intact with friends, and a few ideas for a Halloween night with your group.

Why horror modpacks are back this autumn

Two reasons. The first is seasonal: every year, Halloween brings groups back to darker worlds, with creatures that hunt players at night and sounds you never hear in Vanilla. The second is very concrete: the most downloaded pack of the genre, Cave Horror Project, keeps moving. Its "Chapter 6" shipped with version 3.6 on 10 September 2026, and a 3.6.1 fix followed on 1 October. The last two major versions (3.5.2 from 21 August and 3.6 from 10 September) add up to more than 210,000 downloads on Modrinth in six weeks (figures checked on 2 October 2026).

Playing these packs alone is scary. Playing them with four friends on a server is a different experience: you split up in a cave, you hear a friend scream on Discord without knowing what got them, and every night becomes a group moment.

5 horror modpacks to run on a server

Download figures come from Modrinth and were checked on 2 October 2026. Before you start a pack, read its page: some story packs are designed for solo play first, and their scripts or quests may behave differently with several players.

Cave Horror Project

Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1, about 1.87 million downloads. The reference right now: a pack built around caves, with a story and quests split into chapters. It is updated regularly (latest version on 1 October 2026), which is a good sign for a server you plan to keep running all through October. Keep the same version on the server and on every player's side after each update.

The Horrors in the Fog

Forge, Minecraft 1.19.2 and 1.20.1, about 817,000 downloads. The name says it all: thick fog that cuts visibility, and creatures that take advantage of it. A good pick for a group that wants an oppressive atmosphere without a story to follow. Last updated in October 2024: the pack is stable, but it will probably not change any more.

The Dwellers

Forge, Minecraft 1.19.2 and 1.20.1, about 671,000 downloads. Several "dwellers", creatures that watch and stalk the player, plus Herobrine and various immersion mechanics. The pack has not been updated since January 2024: best for a group that is fine with fixed content.

Fear Nightfall

Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1, about 147,000 downloads. This pack openly presents itself as made for co-op, with a campaign and a lot of custom content. It is the most natural choice for a server with friends: the difficulty is designed for a group, not a single player.

The Broken Script Enhanced

NeoForge, Minecraft 1.21.1, about 255,000 downloads. Built around The Broken Script mod, with small mods that make the world feel like it is "glitching". It is the only one of the five on 1.21.1, so the most recent in terms of Minecraft version. Updated at the end of August 2026.

Installing a horror modpack on your server

On serv-minecraft, modpacks are installed from your server's Modpacks tab, with nothing to upload by hand.

  1. Make a backup if the server already holds a world you want to keep: installing a modpack can replace the server files.
  2. Search for the pack by name in the Modpacks tab search bar, for example "Cave Horror".
  3. Pick the version. Use the same one your players will install, usually the latest.
  4. Start the install, then start the server. The first start of a Forge pack takes longer than a Vanilla one: let the console run until the "Done" message.
  5. On the players' side, everyone installs the same pack in the same version with a compatible launcher (the Modrinth App, for example), then joins the server address.

The most common error when joining is a list of missing mods or mismatched versions. The usual cause: one player has a different pack version from the server. To understand the difference between Forge, NeoForge and Fabric, see our guide on installing Forge or Fabric on a Minecraft server.

Settings that keep the fear alive in multiplayer

A horror pack is balanced by its author for a specific experience. A few server settings are enough to keep it intact in multiplayer.

  • Difficulty: keep the one the pack expects. Switching to peaceful removes the creatures, and with them the whole point.
  • Whitelist: turn it on. A stranger joining in the middle of an event ruins the mood faster than any bug.
  • View distance: a view-distance of 8 and a simulation-distance of 6 in server.properties lighten the load, and a shorter horizon is no problem in a pack built on darkness or fog.
  • Backups: make one before every session. Horror packs love creatures that break blocks or move things around, and being able to roll back quickly helps.
  • Voice: a Discord voice channel, or a proximity voice chat mod if the pack includes one, does more for the atmosphere than any setting.

If the server lags when the group spreads out, our guide to optimising a Minecraft server covers the settings that weigh most on the CPU.

Running a Halloween night on your server

For a good night, three things matter more than the pack itself. First, a date and time set in advance, with the pack installed by everyone the day before: an hour lost fixing versions kills the mood. Second, a fresh world, generated for the occasion, that nobody has explored yet. Third, one simple rule, such as "nobody goes back to base alone" or "we only play at night", to push the group into taking risks.

Keep the server running all month: a chapter-based pack like Cave Horror Project takes several evenings, and the world needs to stay available between sessions.

Which plan for a Minecraft horror server?

A horror modpack usually has far fewer mods than a tech pack like All the Mods. The Modded plan (24 GB of RAM, €18.99/month) is sized for this kind of pack and leaves headroom for a group of friends. The Modpack plan (32 GB, €24.99/month) only makes sense for a larger community or a much heavier pack. For more pack ideas, see our list of the best Minecraft modpacks of 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best horror modpack to play with friends?

Fear Nightfall is announced as made for co-op. Cave Horror Project is the most popular and the most actively updated, with a story split into chapters. Both run on Forge 1.20.1.

How much RAM does a Minecraft horror server need?

Usually 8 to 12 GB for 2 to 6 players. Extra headroom avoids slowdowns when players explore in different directions.

Do my friends need to install the modpack?

Yes. Every player must install the same pack, in the same version as the server, or the connection is refused.

Can I play a horror modpack on Bedrock?

No. These modpacks rely on Forge or NeoForge, which only exist for Minecraft Java Edition.

Can I keep my current world and add a horror pack?

Not recommended. A modpack only generates its own structures and creatures in new areas, so an existing Vanilla world only gets part of it. Better to back up the old world and generate a new one.

To sum up

A Minecraft horror server takes a few minutes to set up: a pack like Cave Horror Project or Fear Nightfall installed from the Modpacks tab, the same version for every player, the whitelist turned on and a backup before each night. With a fresh world and a voice channel, October is the right time to scare your whole group.
